In
October 2016, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
published ISO 37001.It is published by the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO), which is an independent, non-governmental international
organization which develops and publishes International Standards. It is
designed to help an organization establish, implement, maintain, and improve an
anti-bribery compliance program. It includes a series of measures and controls
that represent global anti-bribery good practice. The measures required by ISO
37001 are designed to be integrated with existing management processes and
controls. ISO 37001 certification makes you bring your organization toward a
better business environment. It makes your organization be capable of complying
with globally recognized anti-bribery best practices and proves your competence
toward implementing and managing an Anti-bribery Management System. It
specifies various anti-bribery policies and procedures which an organization
should implement to assist it prevent bribery and identify and deal with any
bribery which does occur.
Purpose
of ISO 37001
ISO 37001 is intended to
help an organization to implement an effective anti-bribery management
system. It can be used internationally. The requirements of
internationally recognized good practice are taken into account. It is
applicable to small, medium and large organizations in the public, private and
voluntary sectors. Compliance with ISO 37001 cannot provide assurance that no
bribery has occurred or will occur in relation to an organization.
However, the standard can help establish that the organization has implemented
reasonable and proportionate measures designed to prevent bribery. Well-managed
ethical organizations are likely to implement effective anti-bribery management
systems in their organizations in the same way that they would implement
effective quality, environmental and safety management systems.
ISO 37001 is helpful to organizations
in the following ways are:
·
It will help provide
assurance to the board and shareholders of an organization that their organization
has implemented good practice anti-bribery controls.
·
A project developer or
project funder may require the contractors, suppliers and consultants which are
constructing a project to provide certification to ISO 37001 as evidence that
they have implemented anti-bribery controls in their organizations.
·
Organizations may
require their major sub-contractors, suppliers and consultants to provide
evidence of certification to ISO 37001 as part of their supply chain approval
process.
Conclusion
Today organizations
which are able to demonstrate ethical behavior are preferred by customers. ISO
37001 certification presents an opportunity to the Indian industry to establish
the strength of their internal mechanisms and checks to counter bribery and
corruption. Promote ethical business culture and protect the company, assets,
shareholders and directors from bribery risks. Demonstrate compliance with the
requirements and supporting guidance for implementing an anti-bribery
management system consistently across the organization. ISO 37001 will be most
effective if its implementation by an organization is independently certified.
