ISO 14001 is
the international standard that specifies requirements for an effective
environmental management system (EMS).The first environmental management system
(EMS) standard, BS 7750, was published in 1992 by the BSI group. In 1996, the
International Organization for Standardization (ISO) created the ISO 14000
family of standards. The current revision of ISO 14001 was published in
September 2015.
The
International Organization for Standardization (ISO) defines an environmental
management system as “part of the management system used to manage
environmental aspects, fulfill compliance obligations, and address risks and
opportunities.ISO 14001 is a series of international environmental management
standards, guides, and technical reports. It provides a framework that an organization can follow,
rather than establishing environmental performance requirements. ISO 14001 was developed to provide a
management system to help organizations reduce their environmental impact. The
standard provides the framework for organizations to demonstrate their commitment
to the environment by:
·
Reducing
harmful effects on the environment
·
Providing
evidence of continual improvement of Environmental Management
·
Meeting
environmental legal requirements
It provides a
strategic framework that can be used to meet internal and external objectives
for Environmental Management. The primary objective of the ISO 14001 series of
standards is to promote effective environmental management systems in
organizations and to develop the potential clients (whether it is a contractor
or supplier) to have ISO 14001 certified EMS.
ISO 14001
provides a framework for organisations to improve their environmental
management systems:
o
Develop
an environmental policy and establish a plan for procedures and controls.
o
Set
measurable targets to meet anti-pollution and legislation requirements and
allocate resources to meet the objectives.
o
Training,
communication and documentation set up throughout the organization.
o
Operational
control to identify risks and impacts.
o
Planning
for an emergency event or prevention identified.
o
Continuous
monitoring and measuring.
o
Proper
recording, auditing and management reviews in place.
Based on the
Plan-Do-Check- Act methodology, it provides a systematic framework for
integrating environmental management practices by supporting environmental
protection, preventing pollution, minimizing waste, and reducing energy and
materials consumption.
Conclusion: As
stated above, ISO 14001 is to define the requirements for the EMS and provides
guidance for its implementation. The standard gives a structured activity for
making environmental improvements in the organization. This can also significantly improve your
bargaining position when taking part in public and private green procurement
tenders, ISO 14001 helps in Reducing harmful effects on the environment, Providing
