The first Draft International Standard (DIS) for ISO 45001
was rejected in May 2016. In July 2017 the second draft version of ISO 45001
was accepted. In September 2017, the international standards committee will
evaluate the results of the ballot and the comments and decide on this basis
whether a final draft is required or
whether the standard will be published in 2017. In view of the number of
comments, we assume that a Final Draft will be produced and that the standard
will be published in March 2018.
the world’s first International Standard dealing with health
and safety at work, ISO 45001, Occupational health and safety management
systems – Requirements with guidance for use, offers a single, clear framework
for all organizations wishing to improve their OH&S performance. Directed
at the top management of an organization, it aims to provide a safe and healthy
workplace for employees and visitors. To achieve this, it is crucial to control
all factors that might result in illness, injury, and in extreme cases death,
by mitigating adverse effects on the physical, mental and cognitive condition
of a person – and ISO 45001 covers all of those aspects.
While ISO 45001 draws on OHSAS 18001 – the former benchmark for OH&S – it is a new and distinct standard, not a revision or update, and is due to be phased in gradually over the next three years. Organizations will therefore need to revise their current thinking and work practices in order to maintain organizational compliance.
Over 7 600 people die each day from work-related accidents or diseases - that’s over 2.78 million every year*. The burden of occupational injuries and diseases is significant, both for employers and the wider economy, resulting in losses from early retirements, staff absence and rising insurance premiums.
The standard was developed by a committee of occupational health and safety experts, and follows other generic management system approaches such as ISO 14001 and ISO 9001
The ISO 45001:2018 standard is applicable to companies of any size, but is especially relevant to companies with a large workforce, manual and heavy work tasks, and/or high-risk work environments. Targeting the health and safety of employees proves that you are actively working to ensure that your operations are safe, both for your employees and the surrounding environment
