ISO/TS 29001: 2010 defines the quality management system
for product and service supply organizations for petroleum, petrochemical and
natural gas industries. ISO/TS 29001 requirements are similar to API system
specifications, such as, control features/documentation methods for conception,
purchasing, training and other fundamental company activities. ISO/TS 29001
specifies technical specification requirements for a quality management system
in an oil and gas industry where an organization needs to demonstrate its
ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and
applicable statutory and regulatory requirements. All requirements of ISO/TS
29001 are generic and are intended to be applicable to all organizations, regardless
of type, size and product provided. Its aim is to enhance customer satisfaction
through the effective application of the system, including processes for continual
improvement of the system and assurance of conformity to customer and
applicable statutory and regulatory requirements. The standard also includes
unique sector requirements for design, development, production, installation,
and product services. The ISO/TS 29001 standard is an extension of the
internationally recognized ISO 9001 quality management systems standard. It
includes additional requirements with an emphasis on defect prevention and the
reduction of variation and waste from service providers. These requirements
have been developed separately to ensure that they are clear and auditable. The
ISO/TS 29001 standard has been developed as a direct result of a partnership
between ISO and the international oil and gas industry led by the American
Petroleum Institute – API. ISO/TS 29001 specifically focuses on the oil and gas
supply chain. The ISO/TS 29001:2010 is
quality management system that provides requirements for the design, development,
production, installation, and service of products for the petroleum,
petrochemical, and natural gas industries. This standard is designed to help
these organizations ensure that they meet all requirements of customers and
stakeholders. The ISO/TS 29001:2010 standard is based on ISO 9001, and includes
supplementary requirements highlighting defect prevention and the reduction of
deviation and waste from service providers. The ISO/TS 29001:2010 was developed
as the result of cooperation between the American Petroleum Institute (API) and
ISO technical committee ISO/ TC 67.
The ISO/TS 29001:2010 is applicable to the following organizations:
-Organizations involved in exploration, production, pipelines
and transportation, and refining of petroleum and natural gas products;
-Organizations involved in the design, manufacture, installation,
service and repair of equipment used in the exploration, production,
transportation and refining of petroleum and natural gas products; and
-Organizations that provide technical, operational and support services to the various industry sectors identified above.
This Technical Specification is intended to avoid multiple certification audits and provide a common approach to a quality management system for the petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries.
