ISO
22163 is the global standard for quality management systems in the rail
industry. It is based on the ISO 9001 quality management standard, with the
addition of rail-specific requirements. Released in May 2017, it replaced the
previous quality standard IRIS Rev. 02.
ISO
22163 was created to ensure higher quality standards in terms of facilities,
operating equipment and services. It aims to achieve global uniformity in
language, assessment guidelines and audits in order to create a higher level of
transparency throughout the railway supply chain.
ISO/TS
22163:2017 specifies requirements for a quality management system when an
organization:
a)
needs to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide products and services
that meet customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements, and
b)
aims to enhance customer satisfaction through the effective application of the
system, including processes for improvement of the system and the assurance of
conformity to customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.
All
the requirements of this International Standard are generic and are intended to
be applicable to any organization, regardless of its type or size, or the
products and services it provides. .
In the context of InnoTrans 2016 – the International Trade Fair for Transport Technology – that occurred in Berlin in September, UNIFE (Association of the European Rail Industry) published the transition plan for IRIS (International Railway Industry Standard) to become a totally acknowledged ISO/TS standard. After ten years of existence, the railway’s own standard is thus finally awarded international recognition officially.
