Whilst the
structure may have changed the principles have not and so for those who have
achieved BS11000 certification, the transition to the International standard
should not create a significant challenge. The opportunity to build on the
experiences of BS 11000 has provided some rationalization and greater clarity
of requirements. The key requirements from BS 11000 have been retained to
ensure the focus on the evolving nature of relationship development. The
wording of some requirements has been simplified by moving guidance to Annexes
within the standard and developed to support understanding. A specific
requirement has been introduced to:
Focus on
value creation and the establishment of a value analysis process.
Consider the
implications of the supply chain and extended enterprise.
Ensure the
evaluation of the business case has been specifically identified and expanded .
Highlight the
need for a more defined engagement strategy.
The inclusion
of the ISO High Level Structure (HLS) has increased the number of requirements.
However some will have been addressed already by organizations implementing an
HLS standard or standards.
The wording
of some requirements has been simplified by moving guidance to Annex G.
Additional
annexes have been developed to aid understanding – Annex E clarifies the exit
strategy and Annex F provides background on the different terminologies for
relationships.
The focus on
competence and behaviours has been reinforced throughout the High Level
Structure and the lifecycle.
A specific
requirement on value creation and the establishment of a value analysis process
has been introduced.
Evaluation of
the business case has been expanded along with a new clause on defined
engagement strategy
So in real
terms the ISO standard should be easier to work with whilst creating greater
focus on those issues that help to build sustainable relationships. Although
the structure has changed, the founding principles and key requirements have
been retained.
The ISO 44001
follows the high-level Annex SL structure set out by ISO for their other
Standards – including the popular ISO 9001 – as well as incorporating the
eight-stage life cycle model used by BS 11000:
*Awareness –
the aims of your organization regarding collaboration
*Knowledge –
how your organization will collaborate with others
*Internal
assessment – evaluating your readiness to collaborate
*Partner
selection – the process for selecting collaborative partners
*Working
together – establishing the joint approach for collaboration
*Value
creation – setting and achieving collaborative goals
*Staying
together – procedures for maintaining your relationships
*Exit
strategy – procedures for a mutually respectful disengagement
ISO 44001 has
been designed to apply to any organization, regardless of size or industry, and
offers flexibility depending on how your organization works with other
businesses.
