The first standard in the
series ISO 37120 “Sustainable development of communities — Indicators for city
services and quality of life†became the first successful result of the joint
efforts of experts from different knowledge areas and countries that set the
ISO/TC 268 to create integrated view for the city performance and its analysis.
This standard provides uniform definitions of What is measured? How should it
be done? What are the requirements for data collection, presentation and
validation? It introduces the common basis for reporting, comparison and benchmarking
of city performance independently of it size. Its new revisions ISO 37120:2018
and relevant standards ISO 37122, ISO 37123 and others further expand the scope
of guidelines and methodologies and set of indicators to steer and measure the
performance of city services and quality of life. However many innovative urban
communities and their administrations which realised the need to undertake
practical steps in the implementation of these standards come across a number
of issues that make introduction of these standards into the daily
administration life too complex, time consuming and bringing additional
overhead without little practical improvement in the concrete local governance
procedures. Some of the advantages are as follows:-
-Facilitates learning and
use of methodology for continuous improvement and evidence based assessment
-Makes possible various
benchmarking options, goals definition and comparative analysis in strategies
and policies development and planning
-Assists in building core
knowledge for city decision-making and enabling comparative insight and global
benchmarking
-Supports new Open Data and
new application development
-The unique certification
services allow forward-looking city councils, municipalities, utility

opportunity for learning how to introduce new international standards into
their daily practices and obtain a certificate of compliance with ISO 37120.

easy steps toward realisation of Smart City concepts and fosters employees
learning of novel digital transformation applications that can effectively

Conclusion: The
certification program realizes the growing trend to continuous auditing as
effective method of compliance under minimum costs and efforts based on testing
for the prevalence of a risk and the effectiveness of a control. ISO 37120
includes more than 60 indicators relevant to a cities resilience planning and baseline
measurement. Cities need indicators to measure their performance for improving
quality of life and sustainability globally.Existing indicators are often not
standardized, consistent, or comparable over time or across cities. As part of
a new series of International Standards being developed for a holistic and
integrated approach to sustainable development and resilience under ISO/TC 268,
Sustainable development of communities, ISO 37120 establishes a set of
standardized indicators that provide a uniform approach to what is measured,
and how that measurement is to be undertaken.
